What Type Of Air Conditioner Is Right For You?
Are you confused about the different types of air conditioning available to install in your home? Let's simplify it and break down the types you can choose from.
The best option is generally a reverse-cycle split-system.
Split-system
Split-system air conditioning uses both an indoor and outdoor unit. These two units are connected by pipes that transfer refrigerant gas. They are suitable for single rooms as well as open areas no larger than 60sqm. Accordingly, they are the most popular type of air conditioning system in Australia.
Price range: $600–5500.
Multi-split
A multi-split system works similarly to a split-system but is connected to multiple indoor units instead of just a single unit. This kind of system is perfect when a ducted system or multiple split-systems are not feasable for rooms located close together.
Price range: A similar price to the total number of split system that would otherwise be installed ($600–5500 per system).
Ducted
This type of system utilises air outlets throughout your house connected by air ducts. An outdoor central unit, typically on a roof where it is not visible, sends cool and hot air through these ducts to control the temperature in your home.
Price range: $5000+ (can easily be $10,000 or more).
Wall/window
A wall or window air conditioning system runs from a unit that is either installed through an exterior wall or window. This type of system, while less efficient and effective than other system does have advantages when you are restricted by budget or situation (renting). Rooms of 50sqm and below are ideal for these air conditioning systems.
Price range: $500–1100.
Portable
Portable air conditioners are just that. A unit that you can move wherever you need it in different rooms. They will generally require you to vent heat out a window through a duct connected to the unit. Like wall/window systems, a portable air conditioner can be a good option when budget or situation considerations are important. However, also like wall/window systems, these are less effective and efficient than split-systems.
Price range: $300–1100.
